   The Michigan Branch is proud to claim Dr. Bennet J. Cohen as one of its founding fathers and first
branch president. Membership dues in 1963 were an astounding $2.00 (my, how times have changed!);
but at just $15.00 in 2000, it is still a tremendous investment. A closer look at the group photo of the
1967 branch meeting reveals how much the industry (and the world of employment ) has changed in
the past thirty years. Just three females appear in the photo; today, of one hundred eighty eight
members, one hundred ten are female. The individuals in the other two photos are identified, left to
right, as: Robert A. Watkins, founding Secretary/Treasurer 1963, University of Michigan; Harold Albert,
Vice President 1967, The Upjohn Company; John Moore, DVM, President, 1967, Michigan State University;
Richard Schwikert, Executive Council member 1967, President 1970, The Upjohn Company; and Norman
Bleicher, Dow Corning Corporation, branch member 1967.

The Michigan Branch continues to thrive and offer networking and educational opportunities to its
membership. An annual awards banquet is held each spring in addition to several continuing education
seminars. A recent addition to these meetings (within the past ten years) is an annual hands-on wet lab,
covering topics ranging from canine and feline anesthesia and analgesia to parasitology to rabbit
methodology and more. Though it is certainly a greater undertaking to host these events, the educational
benefits they provide are priceless.
